Post Action Cameras...
I'm gonna put this in riding gear...why not.

Anyway, Dear wife got me a JVC Adixxion 2 for my birthday after poking and prodding a few geeky friends who recommended that over the GoPro 3+ silver at the $300 price point. But me being the tinkerer...well.. I just ordered a GoPro 3+ Black to compare it to, since by the time I get a waterproof case and the mounts a GoPro comes with, it's a stone's throw from the GoPro 3+ Black.

Plans are to mount them in both the Subaru and in the buggy side by side and go for some "spirited drives" to see how they handle the vibrations, so it'll be neat to see them both film the same events at the same time. Both will be in a waterproof case, both mounted via suction cup systems. Should be a good side-by-side, and at the end, a clear winner will emerge to let me share the fail that is my riding, with the world, in High Definition. :alright:

More to come!

Thus far, my thoughts:

GoPro:
+
It's the R6 of the action cam's. I can go to WalMart and get mounts, brackets, a new case, etc.
It's a little lighter
The app is better (can change camera settings, and it just works a little better)
I think the picture quality is better. Colors are a little more accurate, and sharper.
Can do resolutions beyond 1080p, so if cropping is desired, you still end up with a 1080p video

-
There aren't any mounts that use a ball for adjustment, meaning it's more involved to get things setup right, and it's a proprietary mount system.
not even slightly water resistant outside the case.
I don't see much value with the included remote, as you can use the remote OR the app, but not both, and changing between them is a PITA.

JVC:
+
Water resistant + shock resistant without a case
built-in screen makes it easier to setup
Standard 1/4-20 tripod mounting - inexpensive accessories galore. Mounts on the bottom AND the side for mounting options. (The waterproof case only has bottom mount though)
The included adhesive mount contours incredibly well to compound-curved surfaces like the nose of a bike.
It's oriented the "right" way, meaning it's shaped to not put the big flat side against the wind.

-
The built-in screen really sucks ass, and being on the side is a pain too.
App is a little clunkier to use.
I can't get the tripod mount very solid on the waterproof case without risking cracking it because the tripod mount screw bottoms out into the clear plastic case. I'm worried it may move during use.
The door covering the battery/SD card/USB ports is a PITA to open and seems well made, but...
While recording, you can't just glance at it to see it's still recording. the light is near the front on top. (GoPro has front and rear LED's) (minor)
Can't set it up for upside-down recording on the camera, must be done with editing software. (minor)
Colors are a little over-saturated which makes most things look good until you see vibrant colors, then they look washed out. (could probably be adjusted in editing)

Second video is up, this one focused more on image stabilization. Mounted them both on the luggage rack of the Polaris and did a quick rip up the driveway.

I think the JVC wins the stabilization test impressively, though the sound of the GoPro is much better. (GoPro records at a higher bit rate).

I think the GoPro is your better choice. You should pass the JVC off to me. :D

*The* one Nicole bought me was at BestBuy in Selinsgrove for $250 the other day as an open box special!

Now, the question is - are you being serious that you like the GoPro better, or was it that you liked the JVC? Hmmm..

Hehehehe. i was tryin' to convince you that the GoPro was better to up my chances of scorin' your JVC.

On the Jeep, I'd put it over my shoulder.
On the bike, I'd put it on the tank, but a rearview cam with a dash-mount monitor would be really cool.

I have some tank-mounted footage from nearly twenty years ago. The audio was good behind the windscreen up to 170-ish(don't think I went faster) and the tach is in view. Cool stuff.
I'll have to dig it out for our viewing pleasure but it's on a Euro signal. Someday, I'll get it converted. Otherwise, it's on a 3" screen.

Back to that JVC...
It may have lacked some def in the first vid but I thought it was awesome in the second vid. I'd take it over a GoPro any day, depending on actual usable features. GoPro's proprietary accessories kinda sucks.
I don't like a lot of tech features. I just want to hit a button, on or off, after setting up....don't know which one is better for that.

Sorry to say Fred, I think I'm keeping the JVC mainly because of the better image stabilization, and the built-in waterproofing/ruggedness of it. Hopefully over time the app gets updated for playback (like the GoPro)..

But hey, like I said, get down to Selinsgrove and snatch that one from BestBuy for $250.. I promise, everything's still there! :)

Ideally, I think I'd love to keep them both.. The GoPro would be superior for the car where things don't shake as much.. record everything in 1440p and enjoy the better audio quality... But, that ~$450 (including some of the accessories) is better spent elsewhere than on toys.

Hell, don't bother with Best Buy unless you're an instant gratification guy.. I just noticed it's on sale at Amazon for basically the same price..

Yeah, I'm sure the new toy will receive some significant upgrades.. And if you put a single incandescent light on it, I'll be quite disappointed. :)

I'd actually like to pick your brain on some of the electrical stuff. I know what I want to do, it's a question of doing it right.

JW Speaker H/Ls and Genesis dual-battery kit with Odysseys, for sure. An sPOD isn't to my liking...rather utilize stock switch locations. Then there's the CB/PA, remote spot, driving, crawling and back-up lights, 7-pin trailer harness, gauges and a spot for one more acc'y(cam?). I think that's it for wiring.

Lots of other stuff to do first, like measure the OEM suspension/DS movement and clearances before I finalize a lift/fender decision. Wanna help?

And, hell yeah I'm an instant grat guy! ...but I'm gonna take my time making the changes. You know, kinda like bike suspension changes, one thing at a time.

Of course I do! My vote is always keep it low and cut, cut, cut. (despite my buggy being 7' tall, suspension-wise, it's one of the lowest around..)

HA. I'm more interested in seeing what I can get away with before cutting. I do want to stay low but, most likely, I'll end up in the 3"-4" range with, hopefully, lots of droop.
I can't stand the idea of bumpstop extensions but I may not be able to avoid 'em with a flipped drag link. That's why I want to get under it before I buy anything...check it all out first.

Any helpful hints needed for poppin' out springs and workin'/measurin' everything through their ranges of motion?
I have jackstands, cinder blocks, scissor jacks, a floorjack, tape measure, pen and paper.
I don't have an angle gauge to scope out pinion/DS angles, etc...recommend one?

Oh the CJ is definitely going back onto the road this year. I've been telling myself I need to get back to that thing for years. I've owned it since before I was 16. I'd like to start my long range plans for it too. You'll like that thing Fred, it makes LOTS of noise.

The new JK is pretty neat. It has some balls. I have some ideas for that too but it's hers. She told me if I lift it any higher than it is now she'll kill me. I said I make no guarantees, unexplained things sometimes just happen in that garage. One thing for sure the tires my buddy has on it are going to go soon. It's getting BFG's, she won't argue about that. Probably a different stereo head/navigation unit too.

I think she's going to sell her YJ. We didn't advertise it yet but we have a couple people that know it interested. I hate to see it go but I need space in my garage.

I've got an angle finder you can use.. And an engine hoist is super helpful too, but the one I've had sitting in the garage is going back to my buddy's house.
Really though, droop is over rated except when doing nothing but low speed rock crawling. Compression travel is what makes it fun to drive.
The springs should be cake to pop out... Unbolt the sway bar & shocks, and droop the suspension, and they should come right out.
Ya don't think high clearance tube fenders look awesome? Protection and clearance!

I do think tube fenders may be in its future but I'm only goin' with 34s and may not need them for clearance. Protection is another matter.

So, uh...I need to get to your garage before you lose the hoist? :D

'Nother threadjack. :)
The hoist is a great idea for liftin' axles during my motion tests and I wouldn't have thought about it. What other purposes can a hoist fulfill. Is it worth it to have my own if it's never used to hoist an engine?
'Round my parts, I could find a use for it as a crane of sorts, I guess. You know, gettin' those Dynatrac axles out of the pick-up bed. Kinda a one time deal tho'.

Post Re: Cameras...
Well, this is interesting...

As you've seen, I've been having some issues getting the JVC to stay running for more than a few minutes while on the bike. On a table, it'll record for an hour, no problem. So, I figured it was defective. Tried to call JVC, and that was an exercise in frustration, but I did manage to find out that it has a 12 month parts warranty, but only 3(!) month labor. FORTUNATELY, when I bought it, I also bought the $30 "Canopy protection plan" from Asurion which covers everything, even drops and spills.

So, I started the claim online, got a pre-paid UPS label in email from them, but wanted to give them a call to fill them in on the whole deal. (Lest they hook it up on a workbench and declare "it's fine!" and send it back!) - Nope. Turns out, as soon as they get tracking information saying UPS picked it up, I get an amazon gift card for the full price of the camera, and I can just go buy another one... of any type.. or buy anything I want really. :woot: :woot: :woot:

Just a month or 2 ago, Sony brought out their newest action cam, the HDR-AS100V. My new mount on the bike is very stable, but the image stabilization on the Sony is unreal from the videos I've seen. Like the JVC, it's also splash-proof without a case. The audio is also better, and the app works very smoothly, something that can't really be said for the JVC. So, I think I'm going to give this one a try! It even has an external mic input... maybe I need to affix a mic under the tail near the exhaust? :D

Check out the stabilization... (skip to 7:15)
