Post '13 Zx10R woes
Had a blast at pitt race over the weekend but in the next to last session of the day my engine started making some noise like I may have thrown rod. Some of the other guys think it might be the cam tensioner. It doesnt sound bad when at idle but once above 3000+ rpm it starts making a lot of noise and my engine light and possibly my fi indicator turns on not 100% certain since it was going on and off so quickly. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Im ok when it comes to general maintenance but when working with engine internals its a bit beyond my comfort level doing alone. Anyone know of any decent repair shops in central pa?

If it's making noise and the FI light comes on, it could very well be the tensioner has allowed the cam chain to jump a tooth. I'd not run it anymore until it gets torn down.. Sorry I have no idea on shops.

Drain the oil and check for metal shavings/chunks

Pull the spark plugs and check for damage to the plugs from valves being bent or issues with the crank/rod/pistol /rings

Pull the valve cover and crank timing cover off and see if the timing marks are aligned (spin motor by hand)

If the chain is loose but the marks are aligned install and new tensioner

If the marks are not aligned loosen the chain, align the cams with the crank and install a new tensioner. At this point you will need to rent or but a leak down tester and check to see if the valves are leaking due to being bent

Report back after you have checked these items

Thanks for the suggestions didnt get a chance to tear it apart. Hopefully get to it soon before winter hits. Ended up injuring my back and have had limited mobility since. Slowly getting back in order(pun intended) but its been long road.

Post Re: '13 Zx10R woes
Time for an update. Took the bike to the shop to have it looked over. They ran a oil pressure test on it and was running low and removed the oil filter and found a bunch of copper specs. They said its mostly likely from a spun rod bearing since thats about the only thing in the engine made out of copper.

So weighing my options as to what to do.

1. Do an engine swap from a salvaged bike.

2. Rebuild the engine back to stock.

3. Rebuild the engine and upgrade some of the internals.

4. Part it out or sell as is.

5. Other ideas...

I love the way the bike rides and handles so I'm kind of leaning towards fixing it opposed to selling for something else. Low end for a stock rebuild with labor is probably going to run me about $3,500 if nothing else is damaged. I can probably find an engine for around $2,000 and swap myself but leary on what other issues you might run into on a salvaged motor.

What would you guys do in my position?

I honestly don’t know anything about Wheels of Williamsport’s service department but personally I’d be looking for a specialized race shop over a dealership unless it was a warranty issue that had to go through the dealer. Now I’m not suggesting you have a fire breathing Superbike motor built but having someone I know for certain is very qualified that’s rebuilding an engine for me would make me feel WAY more comfortable while parting with lots ‘o cash. Dealer service departments don’t usually fall into that category around here. How many literbike engines do you think they’re rebuilding? Maybe I’m totally wrong and they’ve got someone good but in my many years of experience with dealers around here I wouldn’t let them touch my bikes. I’m betting Eskimo might know of someone that fits the bill OR even check with Ryan at RyanCo Cycle Works. He’s usually busy as hell but he can do about anything. Just my $0.02

I took it to williamsport for preliminarily diagnosis since the service manager went to school for motorcycles and I know his mom from working at Geisinger. I took it there hoping it was something simple plus in case there was an issue with the gen4 motor that kawi was aware of and might replace it even if it was out of warranty which they did check on and said their wasn't. If I decide to have the engine rebuilt I do plan on taking it to a motorcycle shop but I feel they would be able to handle it there. Waiting for a call back from karns performance in Harrisburg on Tuesday who does engine builds and see what his thoughts are. They were in Daytona for the races.

The service manager at wheels suggested to find a salvaged motor in good working order and swap it in. They quoted me around $500 in labor for the swap.

I'd swap the engine for less than that. Ask Rich who he would take it to for a rebuild (you never know what you are going to get with someone else engine). If you decide to swap engines instead of rebuild let me know and we can work something out

If you buy salvage just swap yourself, its really not that difficult if you have a a lift, they are onn sale at harbor freight right now for 260.

I took it down to karns performance in harrisburg yesterday. I know I'm going to spend more having it rebuilt but I'll know I'll have a good engine and transmission in the end.

Just for a comparison I ran across a ‘17 motor advertised. 5000 miles asking $4000 for it. I still say you’re better off rebuilding.

Glad to hear you're getting it sorted, and honestly, I don't know who I'd have (in this area) do a motor build these days. But, Karns seems solid from what I've heard, I just don't hear their name in the race circles.. That means little, however.

I hope it all works out well for you, it'll be good to have a decent go-to shop for that stuff, since the guy who did my stuff does only cars now.
